Impact Factors for Successful Leadership Development Programs

In a large-scale research project conducted by Harvard University under the leadership of Ayse Yemiscigil, seven criteria for successful leadership development programs were identified, all of which lead to a proven positive ROI. MOMENTUM meets all of these criteria.

  • Leadership development is less about specific tactical skills and more about cultivating broad, impactful mindsets and behaviors, such as resilience and self-awareness. Effective programs aim not to assist leaders in completing specific tasks but to facilitate an inner transformation.

  • One of the key ways leadership development benefits employees is by giving them the opportunity to step away from their daily routines and realign themselves, their work, and their lives. This can lead to a renewed sense of purpose at work and beyond. Encouraging leaders to occasionally press the pause button provides them with the necessary space to find meaning in personal and professional milestones, potentially sparking life-changing insights and shifts in perspective.

  • In their research, Prof. Yemiscigil's group found that effective leadership development gave participants a renewed sense of focus and direction, which often improved happiness and reduced stress. An effect that has also been well documented in other mindfulness interventions outside the leadership context.

  • One of the most interesting findings in the studies was that shorter programs often brought surprisingly large improvements. In some cases, the increase in well-being was comparable to that seen after therapeutic interventions for mental health.

  • It is often beneficial to dedicate time to cultivating the mindset necessary for learning and development before beginning a new program. This includes fostering vulnerability and comfort with uncertainty.

  • Given these insights, organizations should wisely differentiate between short-term success and genuine, sustainable impact, ensuring their development efforts prioritize the latter over the former. While it is often easier to measure immediate outcomes, the most effective programs build on these initial changes by using reminders and other ongoing interventions to establish long-term habits and promote continuous engagement.

  • Finally, as remote work becomes increasingly standard, many organizations have started exploring online options for leadership development. These programs are typically more cost-effective and efficient, making it easier for trainers to reach a larger audience. Research suggests that online programs can be just as effective as in-person ones.
